The secret of the iPhone XR “bokeh” effect even though it’s a single lens

Different from the iPhone XS and XS Max, the new iPhone XR will be released later in October and will only be equipped with a single camera on the back. However, the iPhone XR can still produce images with a background blur (bokeh) effect like the two siblings. The secret lies in the special algorithm applied to the iPhone XR camera software. This algorithm mimics the behavior of a DSLR camera lens at each aperture, then applies similar image results to iPhone shots. Apple calls it a “modeling lens”.

We turn the lens model into a mathematical formula and implement it into images. “There is no one else doing it like this. They just blur the background, “said Camera Hardware Apple Senior Director Graham Townsend. Townsend refers to the workings of the “bokeh” effect on the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max , and the iPhone XR that are claimed to be different from the application on other smartphones. Usually the “bokeh” effect is achieved by taking pictures of two cameras as well as capturing images as well as subject distance information. The cellphone then blurs the background while maintaining focus in the foreground. But the cellphone still sees the image as two different focus fields. Now, a special algorithm on the latest iPhone trio camera is called “viewing” photos like a lens on a DSLR camera, with an infinite focus field only in the background and front so it should be able to do bokeh simulation more accurately. With this algorithm, the “bokeh” effect is not only limited to the rear camera, but can also be used to take selfies with the front camera which also only consists of one unit (7 megapixels) on the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR.

Apple began implementing the “bokeh” effect on the 2016 iPhone 7 Plus which has a dual camera (wide and telephoto). The iPhone XR will be the first iPhone to be able to take a bokeh picture with a single camera. However, before Apple made its own algorithm to realize the bokeh effect with a single camera, Google had already done the same thing with last year’s Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL series phones. Which is better, the implementation of Google or Apple? The new answer will be known after the XR iPhone was released to the market in October.

The ability to take photos with bokeh effects is one of the points of excellence for the iPhone XR which makes it no less interesting than the iPhone XS and iPhone XS. All three iPhones are also powered by the latest Bionic Apple A12 chip. Some analysts even predict that the iPhone XR will sell much better than two siblings, considering the price tag is also cheaper.
